About the VU-choir!
The VU-choir has been around since 1955 and has been connected to the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam from the start. The choir aims to let as many students and non-students as possible experience the joy of singing. In line with this, our motto traditionally was “Komt en zingt allen”, which translates into “come, all, and sing”. Currently, the choir is led by our enthusiastic conductor Dody Soetanto and has about 60 members.
At the VU-choir, prior experience with music or singing is not a requirement. The most important purpose of the choir is just to make music together, rehearse and perform concerts. This goal is achieved through regular rehearsals that take place every monday from 19:30 to 21:45 at De Griffioen in the NU-building of the VU campus. The second purpose of the choir is a social one – to provide fun, and social contact. This is effected through post-rehearsal drinks (Dutch: “borrels”), fun choir weekends, and other social activities organized by the board and the activities committee.
Want to learn more? Go to the links below that provide all the information you’ll need! On the “the board” page you can learn more about the structure of our association and meet the board. Each year we perform several concerts, which can be read about on the “concert calendar” page. Moreover, there is a page provider information about our wonderful conductor and accompanist. Furthermore, we recommend the page “concert history” where you can read information and sound clips of past performances. The last two pages describe an extensive history of the VU-choir including old conductors and projects that the choir has done in addition to the concerts.
